We will still need bankers in the future!

As I sit at my desk and read the latest news about the banking industry, I realize how much the picture of the industry is changing.

The headlines are often grim: “Older bankers are losing jobs,” “Cost pressure and efficiency pressure are driving change.” It seems as if our world is in a constant state of upheaval. I myself belong to the older generation of bankers, and as I read these reports, I feel directly affected.

In my role as a recruiter in the banking industry, I often hear stories from job seekers and former colleagues. Many of them tell me about the challenges they face – takeovers, reorganizations and the feeling of pressure from management. I often hear the phrase: “Older bankers are too expensive.” That cuts deep. We have decades of experience; we know the industry processes like the back of our hand.

But there is another side to this coin. Yes, requirements are changing rapidly with digitalization and the drive to increase efficiency in banking. But now, more than ever, banks should look after their most valuable resources – their employees! It is essential that companies are prepared to invest and develop all their employees. Even if there is no longer as much need for bankers as before – there will always be room for expertise.

I want to encourage! The changes do not only bring challenges; they also offer opportunities for those of us who are prepared to learn and adapt. While some of my peers are resigned or even want to give up in the face of the industry’s cost pressures, I see an opportunity for further development: mentoring young talent can be a fulfilling task! We can pass on our knowledge and help develop new approaches.

The willingness to perform may decrease for some – but that does not mean the end of our career paths! Rather, we should all be challenged to find out how we can position ourselves in a time of change. And yes – there may be quick “off the farm” actions; Nevertheless, it remains to be said that the need for qualified specialists will remain.

I am convinced that we will continue to need bankers in the future – perhaps not in the same numbers as before – but their experience and skills will be indispensable for the success of our industry in times of rapid change.

Even in times of rapid change, there is room for growth, both personally and professionally! Let us remain courageous and confident!
